How Do I Use FTP With cPanel?

FTP Stands for File Transfer Protocol. In short: An FTP connection is used to transfer Files from your Desktop to your Remote Server. This can be for external storage or to update your Websites webpages.


This article will highlight the following:

  • - How An FTP Account Is Created?
  • - How An FTP Connection Is Established?
  • - How Files Are Transferred Over An FTP Connection.


1. Download and Install an FTP Client.


An FTP Client is used to establish an FTP connection between your Device and your Remote Server. {$company_name} Can recommended three FTP Clients. This article will use the FTP Client File Zilla for examples!

  1. Download File Zilla (Windows)
  2. Download CoreFTP (Windows
  3. Download Cyberduck (Mac)


2. Create/Select Your FTP Account.


In order to connect via an FTP connection. An FTP Account is required! Users can either select an existing account or create a new FTP account. To do so, users must navigate to FTP Accounts in cPanel.


How Do I Navigate To FTP Accounts?


  1. Log-in to your Client Area.
  2. Select the option “Services”.
  3. Select the Hosting Package you wish to apply updates to.
  4. On the left side there is a tab called Actions. Select the first option “Login To cPanel”.
  5. Within the first cPanel category called Files. Select the option “FTP Accounts”.
  6. From here users can: Create, Manage and Remove FTP Accounts.


How Do I Create An FTP Account?


  1. Select a Username for your FTP Account.
  2. Select the Domain this FTP account is for.
  3. Enter a secure Password and Confirm the Password.
  4. If required configure the Directory.
  5. If required set a Quota.
  6. Once you are happy. Select “Create FTP Account”.


Select An FTP Account.


  1. Scroll down till you see FTP Accounts.
  2. Under the account you wish to use. Select the option “Configure FTP Client”
  3. From here you can: View Manual Connection Settings and Download Configuration Files for FTP Clients.


3. Login and Send File’s Over FTP.


Now you have selected an FTP account. Open your FTP Client. In this example, File Zilla is being used.


Login To Your FTP Account.


  1. Enter Your Login Credentials.
  2. Host: Enter your FTP Server Here.
  3. Username: Enter your FTP Accounts Username.
  4. Password: Enter your FTP Accounts Password. cJH({Tpm+!l?
  5. Port: Enter your Servers Port. (This should be 21)
  6. Click “Quick Connect”.
  7. Your FTP Client will attempt to establish a connection.
  8. If the connection was successful. A Welcome Message will appear.
  9. B.If the connection was unsuccessful. An Error message will appear.
  10. a.Ensure your Login credentials are correct.


Send File’s Over FTP.


Now you have established a connection via FTP. Files can be transferred.


  1. Within the Left Window. You can navigate your device’s storage. Navigate to the File you wish to transfer.
  2. Within the Right Window. You can navigate your server’s storage. Navigate to the location you require your file.
  3. Simply Drag and Drop the File/File’s from the Left Window (Desktop) into the Right Window (Server).
  4. At the bottom of File Zilla you can monitor the status of your File Transfer.
  5. Queued Files: Here you can view all queued and active file transfers.
  6. Failed Transfers: Here you can view the failed file transfers.
  7. Successful Transfers: Here you can view the successful file transfers.
